community athletic center

Spring 2014
Boston, MA
Critic: Beth Whittacker

Situated in Brookline, MA this project explores the integration of a Community Athletic Center into an area deep rooted in history and tradition. The site has paradoxical characteristics as it is isolated between the public train and a busy commuter street-yet situated in the hearth of communal activity. The cavernous box-like form utilizes an exterior vertical truss system that acts as the main support for the various program. Furthermore, an Olympic length pool bisects the building providing structural support for the main ramping system, connecting the interlocking program. The slight angle to the pool creates a torque of both program and exterior facade. The autonomy of the facade coupled with the extension of the pool activates the site and allows for a greater connection of two disparate areas of Brookline.
